Pondicherry: The Europe of India

Affectionately called as Pondy, it used to be a French colony till 1954. The systematic town planning, statues, churches and colonial buildings still present in Pondicherry reflect the remnants of the bygone past. Though, the local Tamil style of architecture has started to mushroom is the territory. There are several tourist attractions in Pondicherry. For example, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram is lauded for being a prime destination for attaining spiritual salvation. A rich blend of modern science and yoga is practised here. Sri Aurobindo, a famous Indian freedom fighter had founded the ashram in 1926.

Adding to the spiritual ambiance of Pondicherry, foreigners from all over the world visit Auroville, the City of Dawn. This experimental town, founded by Mirra Richard in 1968 is universal in nature and follows the principles of solidarity and brotherhood. Even the Pondicherry museum is known for preserving rare archaeological findings and sculptures. The lush green landscapes are enhanced by the presence of botanical gardens, Ousteri Lake and Bharathi Park. But the most tempting attraction of Pondicherry tourism continues to be the golden beaches like the Karaikal Beach, the Promanade Beach, Mahe Beach, Auroville Beach and the Serenity Beach.
