VaishaliVaishali: The Revelation of an Impressive Past

Vaishali is a small village surrounded by mango and banana orchards. However the recent excavations have revealed a very impressive past of the village. Vaishali takes mention in the Hindu Epic Ramayana as the place ruled by a valiant King Vishal. It was a major centre for trade and commerce during the rule of Mauryas and Guptas. The place is said to be the birth place of Lord Mahavira. Also the last sermon of Lord Buddha took place here. Numerous references of Vaishali are found in texts of Jain and Buddhism. According to theses texts, Vaishali was established as a republic by 6th century BC, prior to the birth of Lord Buddha, making it world's first republic.

The major sightseeing here includes Sanchi Stupa, Kundalpur, Raja Vishal ka Garh, Ashoka Pillar, Budha Stupa I, Buddha Stupa II, Abhishek Pushkarn, World Peace Pagoda and Vaishali Museum. Bawan Pokhar Temple is an old temple here built during the Pala Period. It is situated on the northern bank of Bawan Lake and enshrines beautiful images of several Hindu gods The Buddha Stupa in Vaishali has the one eighth sacred ashes of Lord Buddha enshrined here in a stone casket. Similarly the excavation of the second Buddha stupa also revealed a casket of Lord Buddha's sacred ashes. Abhishek Pushkarn is the coronation tank where all of Vaishali's elected representative were sanctified before their swearing in. Thus, Vaishali Tourism is replete with several interesting facts. Go ahead and unmask them.
