Ujjain: Plethora of Temples

Ujjain also known as Ujain, Ujjayini, Avanti, Avantika, Avantikapuri is an ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the Shipra River in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. Ujjain Tourism is a plethora of temples and places of worship. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela held after every 12 years heightens the city's value as a tourist hub. The early history of Ujjain is lost in the midst of antiquity. By the 6th century BC, Avanti with its capital at Ujjaini, is mentioned in Buddhist literature as one of the four great powers along with Vatsa, Kosala and Magadha.

Mahakaleshwar Mandir in Ujjain is a must-visit place. The temple was destroyed by Altamish in 1235 and restored by the Scindias in the 19th century. It is one of the 12 sacred Shiva shrines known as Jyoti lingas. Vedh Shala in Ujjain is an interesting observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh in about 1730 AD. Among the several observatories that he built in different parts of the country, Ujjain’s observatory is the only one still in use today. Travellers can also visit the beautiful Gopal Mandir built by Scindias in 19th century. It is a magnificent marble-carved temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in blue form. Other must see places in Ujjain include Kaal Bhairava Temple, Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir, Peer Matsyendranatn, Bhartrihari caves and Chintaman Ganesh.
