Kollam: Cashew Capital of India

Nestled between the eight cornered Ashtamudi Lake and Lakshadweep Sea, is the beaming backwater world of Kollam. Once a major spice trade centre, Kollam Tourism today is a heartland of cashew processing industries, rendering it the sobriquet of Cashew Capital of India. Previously called as Desinganadu, Kollam is one of the five ports explored by the famous Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta during the course of his 24 years long journey. The town once had a flourished Chinese settlement and Merchant Sulaiman Of Siraf in Persia found it to be the only port in India to be touched by such big groups of Chinese traders.

 

Out of the several sightseeing attractions in Kollam, 112 years old Lighthouse in Thangassery village is of prime attraction. It gives a scenic view of the sea from the top and the visitors are allowed to enter only between 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Thangassery village also has the remnants of the Old Portuguese Fort in Kollam, built in 1517. Sasthamkotta Lake in Kollam neither freezes in winter nor dries up in summer. Talking about the backwaters of Kollam is a waste without the mention of the majestic Ashtamudi Lake. Lauded for its serene beauty, Ashtamudi backwaters is the second largest lake in Kerala.
