Dalhousie: The Summer Hill Resort par Excellence

Spreading her green lacy frills over five low hills of Dhauladhar range, tourist attractions in Dalhousie are definitely a pride of Himachal Pradesh. The town was named after Lord Dalhousie, the British Viceroy in India. The colonial mansions of the British era blend elegantly with the modern spaces of Army cantonment, the beautiful Dalhousie Public School and the peacefully streaming River Ravi nearby. Dalhousie belonged to the erstwhile state of Chamba. It came in limelight after 1853, when Lord James Ramsay, the 17th Earl of Dalhousie, was looking for an ideal summer retreat and landed on this breath-taking and unexplored hill station. He was spellbound by its scenic beauty and immediately purchased it from the King of Chamba. Soon Dalhousie became a popular escape from the blistering summer days for the Britishers. This adds to the reason why the place has a Victorian touch to it.

Dalhousie sightseeing tour is all about distant mountain views, plunging pine-clad valleys and not to forget, the sacred churches. Bakrota Hills, Panchpula, Jandhri Ghat and Satdhara are some of the popular sightseeing options here. Satdhara is basically a fresh water spring believed to contain medicinal properties. Travellers can walk down to the churches like St. Andrew's Church, St. Patrick's Church, St. John's Church and St. Francis Church to enjoy some time in peace. In December, Christmas celebrations take place in full swing here and the entire hill station is embellished.
