Popularly known as the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, this world renowned avifauna sanctuary is definitely a paradise for bird lovers. Maharaja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur had created this park from a natural depression, around 250 years ago. In fact, it was lauded as an exemplary duck shooting resort during the bygone British era. It was only later in 1956 when it was declared as a bird sanctuary. Evolving as the pride of Rajasthan, this sanctuary has now been acknowledged as a World Heritage Site. It is also one of the rare man-managed and man-made wetlands in the continent, protecting the region of Bharatpur from incessant floods. Additionally, it is known for being one of the best studied wetland ecosystems in the entire world.


Currently it flaunts of 266 bird species, 379 flower species and ample amount of fishes, turtles and other amphibians. One can also spot nilgai, sambar, chital and boar here. The Bharatpur National Park tourism reveals how it was initially named ‘Keoladeo’ as it was named after one of the reincarnations of Lord Shiva. This archaic temple is still present in the centre of the park. Along with it, the location of the park, in between Jaipur and Agra adds further to its touristy charm.
